● Broken, cracked, or chipped tooth: sharp edges, pain when biting, or a piece that broke off.

● Swollen or painful gums: often from food lodged under the gum line, an injury, or early infection.

● Possible infection or abscess: swelling in the gums or face, a bad taste, or a pimple-like bump on the gum.

● Bleeding from the mouth: bleeding after an injury, or bleeding that won't stop or has no clear cause.

● Lost filling or crown: an exposed tooth that is sensitive to air, hot, or cold.

2. Pain or swelling: hold a cold compress on your cheek for 15–20 minutes. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help; follow the label.

3. Broken tooth: rinse with warm water and save any pieces. Cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax.

4. Lost crown: bring it with you. Don't glue it back in place yourself.

5. Bleeding: press clean gauze firmly on the area for 10–15 minutes.

6. Knocked-out tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root. Keep it moist in milk and get to a dentist right away.

Call 911 or go to the ER if you have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, a high fever with facial swelling, or a jaw injury from an accident.

Do you do emergency root canals and extractions?

Yes. After an emergency exam, Dr. Basson can perform a root canal or extraction when it's the right treatment.

Should I go to the ER for a toothache?

ERs can help with pain and swelling, but most can't repair the tooth. A dental office can treat the cause. Use the ER for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, high fever, or a facial injury.

Will my insurance cover an emergency visit?

Most dental plans cover part of an urgent exam and X-rays. We work with many dental plans, including Delta Dental Medicare and Liberty Dental, and we'll check your benefits before treatment.
